In honor of Earth Hour TONIGHT at 8:30

31 Mar

I wanted to point you in the direction of this website – The Big Picture. There are images from Earth Hour 2010 that you can click on and see before and during photos.

Remember, lights out at 8:30 tonight!
I’m sure you have plenty of candles or flashlights to get you through for an hour.

Remember my DIY blotting paper?

30 Mar

I finally dug out some of my old PETA stickers, and I stuck one on the front to cover up the Q-Tips ad on the front.

It took it from this:

To this:

Much better, I think. It makes it more snazzier, and more personalized. I think cute, dainty stickers would look really nice, too, but this was all I had on hand. Plus, I thought it was appropriate – my blotting paper was not a beauty product tested on animals!

And if you missed the original blotting paper tutorial, and you’d like to take a peek, it’s here!

Do-It-Yourself Beauty Tips

Regardless if you are an animal activist or not, please do not overlook this post because of PETA. Please read the rest of my disclaimer at the bottom of the post.*

Now, let me get back to my original post 🙂

My best friend and I were at the infamous WalMart looking for bronzer the other day. The WalMart in our tiny town does not often feel the need to restock, so we were not so surprised to find that they were out of most of the bronzers we were looking for, or if they did have any, they were either too dark or way out of our price range. So I found this DIY Bronzer on PETA’s website and it sounds like a brilliant idea. Here’s what it consists of:

  • An old mineral make up jar or an old compact
  • Cocoa powder, cinnamon, or both
  • Powdered Sugar

And guess what you do with it? You mix it until you get your desired shade and you’re done! My biggest concern would be this mixture becoming sticky in the rain or with excessive sweat. I Googled this recipe, and I found a couple other editions, which include adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil, (though I don’t think I would do this if I had oily skin);my assumption is that this would also make it less of a loose powder mixture, too, and adding cosmetic glitter or using a shimmery colored powder eye shadow for that shimmery look that a lot of women look for in a bronzer. Sure, the ingredients may add up to be a little expensive, but team up with a friend (or two) and if each of you put a little towards what you need, it will easily cut the cost of store bought bronzer. I’ll update the price whenever I buy the ingredients.

So, I was quite excited to stumble across this, and if you Google “DIY Bronzer” you will find a lot of tutorials suggesting this method, so PETA may not be completely off of the marker. Their website also has DIY:

  • Facial Mask Ideas which all appear to be simple and inexpensive.
  • Makeup Remover Personally, I am a little unsure of this one but I thought someone else may be interested.
  • Facial Scrub
  • Pedicure
  • Coffee Facial Scrub Or, make your morning cup before your shower, and take the grounds in the shower without any additional ingredients and rub that on your face. That feels amazing. And a side note: for a coffee lip scrub mix coffee grounds and honey to form a thick paste. Smear on lips for thirty seconds and rinse off with warm water. Use 2-3 times a week. I love doing this.
  • Chocolate Bubble Bath Uhh, yum?
  • Hair Mask I’ve never done a hair mask. If anyone tries this, let me know how it goes!
  • Zit Remedies that really like to try some of these.
  • Bath Salts I’ve made bath salts before! It’s fun and easy.
  • And finally…the actual bronzer tutorial

While we’re on the topic of DIY beauty, I was looking up some form of toner, and I pulled up a lot of results, both for toner and other DIY beauty essentials. Here are some of what I thought were the best finds, all in one spot for your convenience!

If you do any of these, let me know how they turn out! I’d love to hear the results.

* My Disclaimer: No, I do not always agree with PETA’s way of going about things, but yes, I am against animal cruelty. Regardless of where you stand, these are just some really good, fairly inexpensive beauty tips PETA had on their website that I thought I would share with the rest of you omnivores out there. The second half of my post is not PETA related, however the author of some of the links calls the beauty industry a “nonsensical industry” and is promoting DIY make up to both reduce the money going into the beauty industry as well as to eliminate the chemicals in beauty products that do atrocious things to your skin and damage the environment. My goal here is to help you and me both save money, and if we can do that and help the environment, I’m all for it. Basically, the opinions of outside websites do not necessarily reflect my own opinions.

I have my schedule for the fall semester planned out.

27 Mar

I will be taking:

Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy on Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 8:00-8:50 am
Histology on Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 12:00-12:50 pm
Health and Wellness on Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 1:00-1:50 pm
Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy Lab on Monday at 2:00-4:50 pm
Psychology of Learning and Exceptionality on Tuesday, Thursday at 10:50-12:05 pm
Art Appreciation on Tuesday, Thursday at 1:40-2:55 pm
Convocations whenever it is offered (dates will be announced later)

That puts me at 17.5 hours for next semester, and all of those classes are required either for my pre-veterinarian medicine major, my psychology minor, or the general education classes required. I’ll only have one new professor (to me), too.

Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Breeze driftin’ on by
You know how I feel
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good
